Did you know...
That Betta fish are also
known as
- Betta Splendens
- Siamese Fighting Fish
- Beta (mispelling that has come to predominate)
- Chinese Fighting Fish ( wrongly )
- Japanese Fighting Fish ( ditto )
Betta are native freshwater fish from
Thailand (formerly Siam) and Cambodia (formerly Kampuchea). The
following map outlines Bettas in the wild. (red areas)
Although
these beautiful fish were not seen in Europe untill the 1800's, they
have been cultered and kept in Thai households since the 1200's.
Bettas seen in todays aquariums have
undergone centuries of selective breeding and have become far more
aesthetically pleasing than the original 'Wild' Betta.
The Betta on the left is Wild while the Betta on the right is the
result of selective breeding.
That Bettas come in many varieties?

If you think these
photos are beautiful then I strongly suggest you check out the
originating site. I have unabashedly taken them from Daniel Chia's
wonderful site "Betta Barracks"
(a word of warning to those at work -
turn your volume off before visiting Daniel's site as it has the Rocky
theme song playing when you open the page.)
